John: I will print your response for Tony - he is walking time bomb - heart attack 2 1/2 yrs ago they told him NO MORE CIGS said his heart looked like the heart of the marlboro man - it is very hard for people to understand how difficult it is for the real "addicts" to quit - I am making no excuses - I still smoke but in a bizarre sort of way - if I am alone never smoke, can go weeks and not smoke, but put me in a social situation and give me a glass of wine - I want a cigarette - I remember DDD so well - I was astounded at the numbers of smokers - of course I loved it - no hiding all out in the open - good luck Chip and I mean that as your kids worry about you as ours do too - Joannna

I quit smoking cold turkey two and half years ago. Although this wasn't the first time I quit, it was the easiest. American Lung Association has an online self paced program. Part of this program are a set of message boards that provided great support.

Here is a link to their site.

Oh all of this hits so close to home!! I can only imagine all the eating and drinking in 109 days...I won't fit into the cabin! It's tough living with a man who can eat anything, anytime and NEVER gain an ounce. I use to be like that too....WOW, what happened??
On BAIL, I really am planning to visit the gym daily if possible...the "New Me" (I've never visited it once!!!)
I need to be part of your support group and 12 step program (Cyndi, I love your megaphone cartoon!!)

Good luck quitting smoking Chip! Tom has not had a cigarette in about 2 weeks! I'm very proud of him. Unfortunately, I haven't done so well BUT since I don't want to smoke in front of him I've cut down considerably. I'm quite proud of myself just for doing that!

Joanna, I had no idea you can go weeks without smoking. You seemed like another addict, like me! If I could quit for a few weeks, I think I could conquer the thing and never do it again. We are told that quitting smoking is harder than quitting heroin (Surgeon Gen. Dr. Koop told us that years ago), and Chip, I admire your efforts. I get lectures from my kids all the time, only one out of four smokes, and the one that does? I think I would spend all my efforts to rehab her if I could only quit myself.

John, even though you are still addicted to heroine, cocaine, painkillers, etc., please tell how you quit smoking? Any aids out there we can access?

Marc, we quit about the same time, and I gave myself the same "pep talk" as John every single day. I never want to go through that ordeal again, and that's the one fact that stopped me from lighting another one.

And that's a big reason I'm here in a weight loss thread, too, but we won't go there.

Count me in. I put on two pounds on my alaskan cruise in August and swore to lose it- instead I've put on four more pounds! I'm going to the Greek isles in September, so they've got to go!
I made a huge pot of vegetable soup today. That's what works for me. I live on soup and smoothies for a few weeks.
My smoothie is half a packet of tofu (the soft, silken kind packed in water that you find in the refrigerated section of the supermarket) a couple of pieces of fresh fruit, or a couple of handfuls of frozen fruit, and about an eight ounce glass of grapefruit juice. Pop it in the blender. It's about 350 calories and the protein from the tofu stops you getting hungry, and it gives the smoothie a great texture.
I went clothes shopping yesterday. Didn't buy much. The lighted mirrors brought my denial to a dead stop!
Here's to svelte!

Wow - I didn't realize that we are a bunch of wanna be ex or ex smokers here. I quit a pack and a half a day habit on 5/4/91. The first week and month were the hardest. I did use the 12 steps ( I was married to a recovering alcoholic then) coupled with a diet and exercise program. I am here to support you who want to quit. Same with the food plan. I have a fair amount of weight to lose because I have followed the eat whatever plan and lots of it.

What ever it is, we can do it together. That helps more than anything is knowing you have people behind you who care.

All I know is I want a smoke now. I'm not one of those people can just give up. It's been a week.

I am very concerened about Mr. Kimmi's post though. Those are a lot of drugs to be addicted too.

Joanna & Marcie, you guys are social smokers (well, maybe Joanna). I have so many friends like that, drives John nuts. Chip, seriously, speaking for John: He tried several years in a row to stop, but I think it happened when he decided, from the depths of his soul, that he was REALLY ready. I could tell, as many times I had heard it before, he had no new secret methods...just that he was truly ready. From what I've witnessed, that's what it takes, and tremendous willpower. He did change his habits, he craved cigs (like everyone) after meals, driving to work, etc. He started chewing sugar free gum, and still does to this day. He used Nicorette, but BY THE DIRECTIONS. Which he emphatically says is necessary. He used it before, but chewed it like a maniac, gave him headaches. Use it like it says, chew it, put it behind your gum, then chew again, follow the directions. Worked for him the last time. I was ecstatic. He complains that he gained weight, but I don't care. Not enought to justify continuing to smoke. Good luck, just take one day at a time.
Back to the weight loss thread (yuck), TOMORROW is the day for me. I still have no real plan, but I am making a shopping list tomorrow. Trying for little (or no) sugar, reduced salt, alcohol, white bread products, chocolate (we will see).....I don't know about this confused Good luck to everyone
:D

Kimmi, I understand about the chocolate addiction. My favorite - plain old nestle chocolate chips. Can't even keep them in the house. I finally got over chocolate and then Christmas came. After making 3 batches of fudge (sorry for the reminder), I'm addicted again. I will have to go "cold turkey" and Alan will have to put up with a grouchy wife for a couple of days (ok maybe even a couple of weeks)!

Chip - hang in there with the no smoking. I'm not a smoker but I watched my parents and I know how hard it is. They both tried to quit and then would start again. My mother finally stopped. Then, years later, my dad (in his 60's) gave it up cold turkey. They were going on a winter trip to Colorado with friends who were allergic to smoke. Dad stopped before he got on the plane and never smoked again. Unfortunately, he is paying for it in his 70's. Due to lung damage, he is on oxygen. My sister, a nurse, smokes like a fiend and we all wish she could stop. Now her children smoke. Good luck to all of you trying to quit!

You all inspired me. I actually got on my dusty treadmill and walked for thirty minutes while I watch 60 minutes. And it wasn't that bad! Going to try and hike on the weekends (if it ever stops raining here in Northern California). I like this online "buddy" group. Good luck to all you whatever you are trying to cut back on.

Kimmi:

You are right on about making up your mind and then just doing it. You do have to be ready and determined.

I am there with the food for today. I just cleaned the refrigerator of all the stuff I don't want to eat this year. I want to be able to swim and snorkle in Tahiti and climb the Spanish Steps in Rome, walk around The Cinque de Terre and all around Venice in November.

Here we go. I am ready to surrender.

Juicyjuju,That 60 Minutes piece on Google was pretty good tonight! (I may be biased as I got in on Google the day it ipoed.)

I also think that the Indian actress was beautiful.

And the rest of you gave me some will power to shed the extra holiday trimmings I am now wearing :)

Wow!!! I'm overwhelmed by everyone's response to this post. It looks like there was a lot of us who needed the buddy system. Whether the goal is to quit smoking, tone up or lose a little or a lot of weight, we'll all be there for each other to give the support we need. I love all the good tips and the great humor to go with it!!!

Once again, the LCT'ers are there to support each other. :lct:

Good luck to everyone and remember to:

Just to chime in on what Kimmi said: on average, it takes about 5-7 attempts for a smoker to actually quit smoking. And the most important factor in success is the desire by the smoker to really want to quit. Until then, you can chew all the nicotine gum you want, slap all the nicotine patches you want, take all the Zyban that you want ... it all don't amount to a hill of beans unless you REALLY want to quit smoking.

Good luck to all of those that are out there that are former smokers and about to be former smokers. It's one of the most biggest positive health decisions you could ever make for yourself!

Masaki

PS: and good luck to all the dieters as well! I restarted my exercise program yesterday as my New Years resolution. :D

Cyndi- I joined Weight Watchers last year at this time. I am now a lifetime member. I got to my goal weight in July (lost about 18 lbs). It's a very healthy, sensible program and easy- the program has changed alot in recent years. Yes, you can still splurge ocassionally- I did and still go out to dinner once a week (and eat and drink what I want when out). I also try to do moderate exercise 5x's/week.

Good luck!

I'm thinking we need a separate "smoking cessation" thread. What do you think? I am one of the fortunate few never to have been addicted to nicotine, although I flirted with smoking, since I have lived most of my life with heavy smokers, first my mother, then my husband. The latter is a former smoker, but still struggles very hard with it.

Meanwhile, my exercise for the day will have to be walking. Since I live downtown in a walkable city, I walk to the subway, then to the office. I can walk an extra stop whenever I have the time, so this morning I'll do that.

Tomorrow I'll start back on my simple Pilates routine (I call them my "stoutness exercises", and my Tai Chi warmups. David started back doing serious Tai Chi practice a couple of weeks ago, and I have to match him, somehow (he practices almost every day!)

I love my Balance Ball. Just sitting on it and you can't help bouncing. It's aerobic. Add a few other moves and you can have a really great workout.

Concerning losing weight: I have found that first I must get all undesirable food out of the house. If I just know it is there, I eat it. Also, recording what I eat makes me very aware of what I eat. I diet regularly for two months or so before each trip and then when I come back. I will NOT diet on RSSC.

Have to weigh  in here. I've yo yoed much of my life but about 10 years ago I started gaining a few pounds a year, without taking anything off. Bottom line is that last year, I finally faced the music/mirror and did a MAJOR change. Took me 6 months and I lost 45 pounds! I'm obviously thrilled and needless to say it wasn't easy!!! Especially cause I'm only 5 feet tall.

Tried Atkins, SB and everthing in between :app: ) quit drinking diet sodas, and I weigh myself EVERY morning. Also, as I was losing, I gave away ALL my clothes that were too big. No saving 'fat clothes' for the eventual fall back!!!

Anyway, it is and will probably always be a daily struggle to stay on track! So........GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US!!!

bonnie, I think your post nailed the primary message to weight control, 'eat less move more.'
I believe excercise is the center of gravity
to all diets/weight reduction plans..not only do you benefit--health wise--you feel better after (love those endorphins). One key is to find
an excersie regimen you love and couple that with the right food intake. Good luck to all..r/wes

We have it the hardest, it seems we hide extra pounds with less success than the taller girls.

Hi all!! Today is the day!! It seems much more of an adventure this time with all of us working together, rather than something to dread.

I ate my 200 calorie breakfast, after I did my Denise Austin workout. Felt good!! I'll just be glad when I can move more freely and come close to doing the workout like her :D

Joanna & Wendy - I agree that the smokers (all stages) are sharing their feelings and inspiration. No matter what bad habit and addictions we are trying to get rid of, it is so hard to do. Talking and sharing seems to help a lot!!! I've never smoked but my husband did for years. He quit once, started again for several years and then quit for the second & last time using the Nicorette like John (Mr. Kimmi) did. It really worked for him, too. But watching him struggle, I know how hard it is for those who smoke.

Joanna, my mom is also one who can smoke every once in awhile and then go for a long time without even touching one. But now it has been years & years since she has had a cigarette.

Bonnie – I just read your words of inspirations. You said it all and so beautifully and succinct. Congratulations on your success (and very hard work)!!!! But what is EFX?

Karen & Bonnie – I’m 5 ft 1 ½”. A tad taller than both of you, but still pretty darn short. I don’t mind being short at all but it is just so unfair that we can’t have as many calories and extra weight does show up fast. Oh well . . .

Masaki – I think you said the most important thing of all. “You have to REALLY want to quit smoking” or lose weight, etc, etc. Nobody can do it for us.

Olivia,John, the Cleave, Pam, Southernlady, Marc, Marcie, juicyjuju, Chip, McKeever & Wes – I never got a chance to personally welcome all of you to our group. Enjoyed all of your posts here and all your advice, ideas and encouragement. The posts are being added so fast, I’m not able to respond to all of them. This is so exciting!! Keep the posts coming.

Thanks Wes for your kind words! I read your Navigator Novella daily exercise program with special interest!! You are an inspiration!

Cyndi, an EFX is an elliptical trainer. Seems to burn more calories than a treadmill, is a bit more challenging and is easier on my back. First time I got on it I did a whole FIFTEEN SECONDS!! Thought I'd die! Very gradually I increased my time and now do half an hour.

Karen (and all our short friends).... yup, if we gain an ounce it looks like a pound! But my husband always told me I have a 'tall' personality!

Wes - Thanks!!! Did you manage to keep any extra pounds off on your Navigator cruise? You did so much diving that I bet you did pretty good in that department.

I have a great tip to add. I discovered this the last few months. When I'm at work and craving something to eat, I pop in one of those breath strips. It is so strong in minty flavor that it really satisfies any craving. Then, I have water right after, which is also a good thing. Yesterday on TV I heard one of the many weight guru's talking and he suggested the exact same thing! I've never heard of his book before, be I think I'm going to get it - The Thin Commandments - The Ten No-Fail Strategies for Permanent Weight Loss by Stephen Gullo. Has anyone read it?

Cyndi, your welcome...no weight gain. when I go on vacation as I start the day at 6 am...whether
skiing in the Italian alsp (to run six miles) or onboard the Navigator..while onboard, I would run for 30 min (23 laps) and then swim for 30 min (lots of laps)..because I know we are going to have access to wonderful food and drink. Thus, I can enjoy as much as I want--knowing I will excerise daily--and on the sea days I got two-a-day workouts in..running 30 min on the elipitical and more swim laps in..but the key for me was being brought up in California where we did physical training in school from 6-12 and then I played intramaurals in College..Now, with the Army PT is also a daily pursuit--but the key is to have the self discipline to do it on your own.
Find an excerise (aerobics, pilates, tennis, jogging, dancing, diving) that u love and then do it....r/we

Wes - you are one of the smart ones. You exercise BEFORE you really need to. I'm impressed. I grew up in California too, but somehow I still became a couch potato. :( I guess it's never to late to change that.

Great topic idea, Cindi.

After being off it pretty much full-time since our last cruise, I started South Beach again today. I love the way I feel when I follow the program, but I do miss my sweets. :(

I'd love to lose 20 or 25 pounds before BRAVO. My clothes fit beautifully on the last trip and that was after only about 2 months "on the beach". This time, I'm aiming higher, though. For once, I'd like to feel like I look good in a bathing suit as well.

So far, so good. I had my SB breakfast, a string cheese snack, and I'm just sitting down to a salad for lunch.

Hang in there everyone! Think how great we'll all look if we stick with it.

As I was checking out of the supermarket today (there were some food cheaters in my cart) I saw the Jan 10 issure of People mag (cover full of great looking woman who have lost mega pounds) and there are several articles about people who have lost weight using many different programs - some unbelievable stories - worth reading - Joanna

This afternoon I walked for one hour, seemingly all uphill, returned home and raked/swept 3 ton of oak leaves in the yard. Now I'm too exhausted to reach the 3 cartons of Ben and Jerry's in the freezer...

Karen,
Excellent choice in Google. I found that story fascinating.
Fell off the wagon tonight. Did good with the diet today but can't face the treadmill :( Oh well, tomorrow is another day...
Suzanne, you must live on the other side of the tunnel. I live in Montclair. This winter storm is the pits. Otherwise, I'd be out walking three miles a day ;)

Proud of you guys!! Suzanne, obviously you haven't had our rain or you would have been in a row boat raking leaves! I really hope to visit the gym on Voyager for the FIRST time on any cruise...my bridge lessons can wait! You guys are a good inspiration for me too!! Question...?? Should I eat the room service eggs benedict before or after the gym?? (I have NO WILLPOWER...please send me some!)

Kathy, I too am back on the beach as of yesterday. I do it using their on-line program, so I weighed in today, after avoiding doing this for about a month. I'm three pounds up, but that's not bad considering the holidays.

I also love this diet when I stick to it religiously. Which reminds me, I have to go downstairs and make my huge salad to take to work for lunch.

Also did my pilates and my tai chi warmups this morning. And will walk that extra subway stop on the way to work.

Eat well today, everyone!

I did well too. Ate exactly as to my plan for the day and exercised too. This morning I missed the workout, but, I worked until after midnight last night so sleep was critical too. My exercise component is for 4 or 5 days a week.

I see my Doctor today for my annual exam. So I am hoping for some support there too.

I quit smoking years ago. I was lucky to find a really good motivator. I had a patient that was 32 years old, taking birth control pills and was a smoker. She had a major stroke and seeing her made me go home and throw out all my cigarettes. I had cravings for years afterwards, but never started again. Good luck to the rest of you in finding your motivating factor.

My biggest problem right now seems to be that I am craving sweets. I am trying to eat fruit instead and it hasn't been too bad as we received two packages of it from Harry and David for Christmas and it was good. I just finished it off this morning though, so we'll see if I can continue to buy it here and eat it or not. MN is not well-known for it's fruit in the winter!

Kathy (Kathleen) – I’m glad you are joining in. There a many of you that like the South Beach. It really does seem to work. I still like counting calories but I’m set in my ways :D You’ve got time to lose the 25 before BRAVO. Just stick with us and we’ll keep our focus.

Joanna – thanks for the tip on the People magazine. I’m going to buy it. Pictures are always a great motivator for me. Plus the success stories.

Suzanne – Good job!!! Boy, where did you get the energy? (If you’d like to come down to San Diego we have lots of leaves for you :D ) When I met you that day on the Mariner (I was the visitor), you looked like you are in great shape!!! Now I see why.

Juicyjuju – I love walking too. But since I’ve decided on doing the Denise Austin TV workouts at home, it was a good feeling to drive home in the rain, knowing the weather wasn’t interfering with my workout. Good job on the diet yesterday. The treadmill is still there for today – you can do it!!

Marcie – Have you left yet? Nasty weather today. Good luck. Re: your question about the eggs benedict – when on a cruise it is hard not to have it before AND after your workout :D . But I vote for after the workout IF you have to choose. Here’s some willpower for you on the way: WILLPOWER, WILLPOWER, WILLPOWER. Hope that works :) We’ll help you through your 109 days. Of course, if we were there with you it would be so much easier :D :D Oh well, next time . . . .

Wendy – You are doing so good already with your South Beach diet and all your workouts and walk to the subway. Good for you!!! I gained 5 over the holidays but since yesterday I lost 3 of them. Yeah!! You did good to only gain 3. They should come off quickly.

Kathy – Midnight???!!!! Of course you needed sleep. Take care of yourself and good luck at your doctor visit. Pass on any advice you get. Have a good day today and don’t work so late!

Loon – You did great to quit smoking years ago. You were really motivated. Sweets are my weakness, too. I’ve never had the Harry & David fruit, but their chocolates are to die for. Fruit is much better for you. Good for you!!

Good luck to all of us today. It sure feels good to be on the right track again.
