Hi everyone,

I have, like many, been reading your posts for quite a while now. I love the forum that you have. We are Ruth and Fred, and have been cruisers for many years on the Windstar line. We love the cruise line, but after 13+ cruises, filled with returns to the same itineraries, we decided to stretch our horizons. We just booked a PG cruise next October, and can hardly wait!

I know that I will have a ton of questions, as I feel very much a fish out of water. My husband and I are from Bermuda, and just love being at sea. Hope you are all ready for lots of questions!!!!

Ruth

HI, we are VERY new at these boards and perhaps I should wait and lurk for a spell until I understand the jargon, but y'all are so welcoming that I find myself typing while my DH is watching TV. We are Jessie and Jay (I'm Jessie)from SC. We are relative newbies to cruising---in 2002 ? we attended a family gathering cruise (Celebrity) in Alaska. I had not been on a cruise---in my snootiness I thought the cruise would be too "unreal" or whatever. Plus my idea of a vacation was white sand, clear waters and a drink with a umbrella in it---not Alaska. Needless to say, my jaw was in a state of disrepair after the cruise as it had dropped for the entire 7 days. What an awesome experience! What a beautiful dream come true! You mean I only have to unpack and pack the kids things once?? You mean our surly teenager could leave us and we don't have to worry? You mean I didn't have to suffer throught planned family meals? Wow! Oh, and BTW, Alaska was not bad. :) (ie., I want to go back!)

We booked our next cruise on that trip --they do know how to get you, don't they? We went to the Western Carribean and left from Charleston, SC--nearby so we drove to the boat. Dive, dive, dive. :)

My DH has always wanted to see Tahiti, so after 50+ years we are finally going on the PG for his b-day. He is originally from the mid-west and I am originally from good old Santa Monica, CA. We both work in the medical field.--We have been married 11 years and have a 9y/o and "his"(my stepson) teen is going on 18. We also have a couple of dogs and when we return from Tahiti, I will get a couple of kittens as my b-day present. :) In about a year, I will be celebrating my 50th and want to go to the Galapagoes--my dream. It's kinda weird being "older" parents and I often feel self-conscious but I hope the PG will be everything Jay has dreamed of.

Okay, sorry this was so long---hope I didn't totally embarass myself but thanks everyone for being so nice.

Peace, Tehani

Hi Tehani,
I may live in Tucson but I'm really a Georgia girl at heart so welcome to another Southernlady!

Can't advise you on the PG but sailed on the Voyager through Tahiti and am dying to go back. When we do, it will be on the PG.

By the way, my hubby was born and raised in Santa Monica. Small world!

The people on LCT are great. Got questions? Ask away!

Hi Tehani,

Welcome to LCT - I grew up in LA - and hung out at Station 26 in Santa Monica all summer. Did you go to SaMo high? Hami Grad here.

You will LOVE Tahiti!

Donna, don't dispair the peaches were not too good this summer! Have you seen the new aquarium in Hotlanta? We haven't but have heard multiple reports that it is fantastic!

ChatKat--get out!--I think I use to bodysurf from Station 18 and the riptide would pull me to Station 26 or so. Don't quite remember (the post-menopausal brain lapse is upon me) but recall it was fun, exciting, and most of my youth was spent there.

I went ot Uni h.s.; my dad went to Samo until the government yanked him out into a japanese-american concentration camp when he was a h.s. sophomore. :( sad days. But Samo recently awarded him a h.s. diploma. ahhhh, makes you wonder if we will learn..

Thanks for the welcome!

My cousins went to Uni - Classes of 69-71 and 72 I was class of '73 but I think you are a little younger. But we probably know someone in common. And they're still body surfing between 18 and 26

Donna - I did not know that Alan was a local! Did he go to Samo? (Santa Monica High)

Welcome Tehani,

Several years ago we were on the PG in Tahiti for my husband's birthday & it was very special. Last year we were on a small boat in the Galapagoes on his birthday in April. These are two magical places to go. You will have great times in two very different places.

Best wishes, Jackie

thank you Jackie---would you recommend the tour company you used in the Galapagoes? Or even a good message board website (probably won't find one as friendly as this one) that I can peruse for info?

Alan is a Pali grad but his sister graduated from Uni, probably around 1960 - much earlier than you guys ;) . I think Alan's mom went to Samo. She tells stories of going to school in tents (must have been after an earthquake?)

Tehani, haven't been to the aquarium yet, still too crowded. We'll probably go sometime in 2007. I've heard rave reviews so looking forward to it.

Don't know about the earthquake but sounds likely. Alan would not recognize Pacific Pali and the PCH if he had not been there in recent years. Talk about growth! Ask him if he remembers going to Gelson's mkt after the movies...ah and the 4th of July do-da parade.

The Georgia Aquar has pre-assigned times to enter to keep the crowds down. The Ritz Carlton in Atlanta had a great pkt that included "open time" tickets plus a room at the Ritz for a good price. Dont' know if that special is still running, but thought it might be fun to treat yourself. How's the weather in AZ? We had a frost (for about 2 hours) but it reached about 65 F today. A friend just came back from Augusta today and said it was the same there. Weird Dec. weather.

Jim--thanks for the welcome! What is Mile's City like? We sure appreciate helping us out with our questions. This is such a nice group of folks, I feel so welcome and comfortable!

Alan, drove me by Pali about 5 years ago when he was showing me "the old neighborhood."

Tehani, we've been having unusually cold weather here too, especially at night. Warms up somewhat in the daytime but not like it usually does. Of course 50 - 60 are cold daytime temps for us. Also have had some extremely windy days where the dust is so thick I can't go outside because of allergies. Luckily, the bad days dont' last long and then we're back to beautiful desert weather.

The Charleston area is one of my favorites, especially Kiawah. Need to introduce the area to Alan.

Miles City is a small town of about 9,000
people in Eastern Montana.
We are 145 miles from Billings which is the largest city in the state (100,000). Eastern Montana
does not have mountains. It is ranching with a little farming. Some areas of trees but not many.
Fantastic mule deer and whitetail deer hunting. All kinds of birds. 200 miles to the Black Hills of South Dakota.
We can get up to 115 degrees in the summer and minus 40 degrees in the winter.

Holy cow! No wonder you like to travel! :) ( Just kidding, but commenting on what a temperature range!) But I've lived in small, rural towns before and have experienced the warmth and the wonder of feeling like you are in "your community"---going to "your bank", etc. It also must be really nice to come home to your town after crusing about the world.

Thank you Marcie! BTW, I love your black cat. My black cat died this year at the age of 19---it's been hard on us as we just lost our 14 y/o border collie a year ago. When get back from the PF, I will begin a serious search for a couple of kittens. :)

Do you think it's necessary to bring rain-gear (e.g, ponchos) to the FP in Dec?

Ok, I finally got my avatar fixed so that my pic shows, so it is time to formally introduce myself.

Hi! My name is Shawna and I'm a Gauguinaholic. My husband Jack and I are early 40's and have our own computer consulting firm in Houston, which makes it difficult to get away for any length of time. No kids at home, just cats. We first sailed on the PG for our honeymoon in 2002, and are coming back for PEARLS to celebrate 5 years without any spousal homicide. For the past 5 years, I have intermittantly dreamed about being "on the boat" and now that we have booked the cruise I am completely intolerable. How many of you have spreadsheets of your cruise showing when you are in port, when at sea, and listing excursion options for each time period?? It's not my fault, it's an addiction. Or simple insanity. Anyway, as I said we have difficulty taking long stretches of time off, and so haven't had the opportunity to take any other cruises, and I can't bring myself to go on the short ones that sail out of Galveston after sailing on the PG. My middle name is Lee, but it really should be Spoiled. After reading some of your posts, however, I have decided that we NEED to take the time every couple of years and go some of these other places. We have traveled some, especially to Paris, but always land-based, as we can make shorter trips that way. RSSC has some fantastic sounding cruises that I would love to take, though. I am jealous of you all. Of course Jack was in the service and has been absolutely everywhere and we travel for business, so getting him excited about leisure travel is a little more difficult. The service on the PG was enough to warrant an easy return.

I am looking forward to the luncheon on the Navigator on 12/12, and meeting other B&K Luxury Cruisers. And yes, the luncheon is listed on the spreadsheet. You can't miss me - I'll be the one bouncing off the walls in desperate need of Ritalin. Champagne will have to do. cheer See y'all there!!

Hello Shawna, and welcome! We have been bitten by the PG bug, too. There is just nothing like peacefully gliding along in the French Polynesians alongside the love of your life.

I am totally envious of you that you are on PEARLS...

Nice to meet you here, and hope to meet you on a cruise someday! :)

Hi Shawna
So happy to have another Houston cruise lover on LCT. We are a small but very happy group - especially when we have a booked cruise and embarkation is only a few days or even months away. Absolutely, you NEED to book another very soon.

Hi Shauna, we too have the Polynesian Flu, we've been three times, for a total of 4 weeks on the PG. We spent our 20th and 25th on board. I always think that it will be the last time, but who knows, maybe 2008! We thought about PEARLS, but decided to wait a while longer; can't spend our *entire* retirement fund there!

Guess I should step out from the shadows...

My name is Liz, and my DH and I will be cruising to Alaska this summer on the Mariner. Our only other cruise was the PG for our honeymoon in 2002. He had to pry me off that ship!

Not sure how we'll fit in here - we don't have the vacation time or money to cruise as much as many of you. I've been extremely lucky in that my work has sent me to some great places and I've been able to bring DH (Paris, Amsterdam and Stockhom), and some places I haven't managed to bring him to yet (Melbourne, southern France, the Hague, the UK). Traveling for work (even with DH) and vacation are completely different though - I never completely relax when I'm there for work - though I do like interacting and working with locals - great way to get to know the people. (and, unfortunately, no one else pays for my plane ticket and hotel when I am on vacation!)

About us - we're kept by 3 furry children (all cats) and like to hike as the weather allows. We've also recently started biking again, and hope to keep it up to help us stay in shape.

Anyway, just a meek hi from me before I overload you all with my questions later.

:)
Liz

Hi Liz and welcome! I am sure you will fit right in here. Please don't feel meek by any means! Just start asking questions and someone will surely answer!

PS
I am a cat person, too!

A warm welcome, Liz, to LCT!

It doesn't matter whether you are able to travel a lot or a little. We all do what we can manage to do with the disposable income we have set aside for travel. What's important is to enjoy and savor the trips you take and the memories you make.

Here's hoping you post frequently and participate in LCT's variety of discussions.

Liz - I hear you! Don't worry - none of us measure our contributions to this board by the size of our cruise lists. One of our most prolific posters here has never been on a cruise ship! (though that will be changing in the near future) ... (hi robert!) :D

Welcome to LCT!
