We are thinking about taking the Overlander train from Auckland to Wellington and flying back to Auckland the next day. I'm hoping that someone has taken the train in either direction or the excursion to the park with Regent and can give me some feedback on whether it is a good way to quickly see the scenery. We've spent time in Auckland before and have two days planned pre-cruise this time. Any feedback or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Been a LONG LONG time since I have done this but that probably takes about 12 hours and I am not sure that is going to meet your expectations. There will be highlights along the way and you will see rural New Zealand but that is a LONG time on a train.

I agree with Ngaire. If you haven't been there before, how about taking a ferry from Auckland to nearby Waiheke Island instead of going to Wellington?

I have to agree with Ngaire.
Like many railways around the world it has been allowed to become run down, and at one stage , the Overlander came close to being closed.

Thank you for the input. We have decided not to take the Overlander and to look at different options for day trips from Auckland. We have already booked our last few days in Russell and will look at travelling to Waiheke Island as well as south of Auckland for the first few days - so much to see and such little time!

Just another option for Auckland.
I have not been on these tours but have only heard good reports about them.
The Rainforest tour in Auckland in particular.

C, We always enjoy the Hop On-Hop Off buses, too. Here's a link to the website.
