And for those of you who would like to donate to AmeriCares with your Paypal account, you can do so here at the Writers Cafe. Kevin McDonald, the website owner, has been kind enough to set up an account and the donations are pouring in. All donations will go to AmeriCares. It is heartwarming to see strangers pulling together for such a worthy cause.

Rotary Clubs International are also collecting. The Woodland Hills Rotary Club today collected and matched donations by members from it foundation. Several members have family in the affected areas. The International Service team from Woodland HIlls arranged with a club in Australia to buy water purification kits and the Aussie club will be personally delivering them and other supplies to the victims.
None of the money will go for administrative costs - it will all go directly to those in need.

I saw a man on the news today. He was obviously hungry and eating a bowl of what appeared to be rice. He was crying while eating his rice and having a hard time emotionally. I matched his tears, it was the visual lowpoint of all the coverage for me.

Not sure why I did it this way, but I contributed to the American Red Cross, as I did after 9/11. This time I did it through Amazon.com, where I often shop and did the one-click thing. Easy. When I did my thing this morning, the contributions were just topping $4 million. I just checked and now they are at $6 million. Who says Americans are stingy? Makes my really mad when the media hawks this view.

I was pleased to be advised at work today that my employer, InterContinental Hotels Group, will match employee donations, given through UNICEF.

That's great Denise! We too want to donate today but not sure which to choose...don't some have smaller admin fees (with more going to the cause)??
Appreciate your opinions on this!

That's why Leslie's link is so good; you can read the financial reports of the various groups to determine their efficiency. There's also a site for the American Philanthropic Institute which rates the groups. We made our choices yesterday, Doctors Without Borders and Americares.

Another site is http://www.interaction.org/sasia/index.html, which is from InterAction, a coalition of organizations engaged in humanitarian and refugee relief. It describes the work being done by each member organization, and provides a portal to find out more and contribute. My own work brings me in contact with a number of these organizations' work in the refugee field, and I have a great deal of respect for what they do.
